Life and Death in the Desert

We found this flower and many more like it
blooming on a short hike last week in the
Colorado National Monument. This time of
year it becomes very obvious that where there
is water, there is life and where there isn't,
it's bone dry and dead. A couple of weeks
ago, we ran across a full skeleton of a cow
just outside the park. It was in a ravine
that actually was quite damp, so we weren't
sure what killed it. It was very stereotypical
though of what you see on those old "Death
Valley Days" type shows. Kinda creepy...but
kind of cool at the same time. And duh...of
course I didn't have my camera with me.
