This photo from the McMurdo public I:drive shows
a really large crevasse. Crevasses like these
are scattered all around the ice shelf and
about every few years or so, people fall into
them and die. The SAR folks do a good job of
surrounding spots like this and other potential
deep crevasses with black flags. Black flags
mean...do not go here...bad things happen to you...
you die. Fortunately with modern technology,
they can find most of the crevasses. Thank
goodness there aren't any of these monsters
lurking on my way to work every day.
