Bats

I was out walking this evening and just a couple
blocks from our house, I saw three bats. They
were just fluttering around, doing some dive
bombing (not at me...probably at bugs) and
were really fast. I haven't seen a lot of bats
before, but I do remember seeing them while
fishing near the Kankakee River when I was
growing up in Indiana and when we were in
Sydney a few years ago. The ones in Indiana
were really small like the ones I saw tonight.

The ones in Sydney were huge. About the
size of a medium sized dog. We were listening
to an outdoor concert at the Opera House and
they were flying out of the nearby park at dusk
toward the Harbor Bridge. Because the bridge
was lit up, bugs were congregating around it
and it made a feast for the bats. Hopefully the
bats here never get that big (I know they don't)
but if they did, we'd never see another mosquito
around here again.

As I mentioned in a previous comment, I've just discovered your blog. I randomly clicked on August 2006 archives (OK, maybe not so randomly since that's my birth month) only to discover pictures of big scary bats! Back in July 2006, my husband and I went to Tioman Island, Malaysia and HOLY MOLY they've got some big-ass bats! You can see my post here: Tioman, Malaysia I even made a short video that people have actually downloaded (it's titled "Bats Movie 2")! Amazing the stuff people will download, isn't it?

Anyway, now I've also just discovered that you grew up in Indiana! I was born and raised in Indianapolis (a long time ago). My oldest son lives there now, but he liked the weather in Atlanta better because usually they get ice rather than snow, and most places have delayed start-times. He likes that part.

Very nice blog :D
