Play Ball!

Yesterday, Grand Junction came one step closer to getting
a minor league baseball team. The top two executives of
the Golden Baseball League visited with the Grand Junction
Parks & Recreation Director to discuss playing at Suplizio
Field next summer. The Golden Baseball League is a Class A
Indpendent Baseball League that was formed several years
ago. Currently the league has teams in California, Nevada
and Utah. Next year a team is guaranteed for St. George, Utah
and Grand Junction seems a perfect fit and rivalry with the St.
George team. The league is also looking at Farmington, N.M.,
the San Francisco Bay area and Santa Clarita, California, but Grand
Junction is near the top of the list. Competition appears to be
good as 35 former players have graduated on to Class AA and
Class AAA teams owned by Major League teams. Because it is
a short season league, the games won't interfere with either
the JUCO World Series in the early summer or Mesa State
baseball games in the spring. The 2006 season began June 1
and concludes Aug. 28. Hopefully a team will be here to watch
for the 2007 season. So far, so good.
