Roll Cage Mary
An icon of sorts rises above McMurdo Station, on Hut Point,
overlooking Winter Quarters Bay. It's Roll Cage Mary, or
as it is officially called, Our Lady of the Snows. It's
a memorial dedicated to Richard T. Williams who died in
1956 when his D8 bulldozer broke through the ice.
Over the years, it's seen some changes, starting out
almost grotto-like in appearance. It was last restored
in 1995 by a group of Carmelite nuns in Christchurch.
To this day though, it's a popular hiking destination and
we all feel much safer as she stands guard over town.
