ASMA
Today I attended the Dry Valleys Field Training Course.
This is to ensure that all rules are followed if one
goes out to the McMurdo Dry Valleys. The Dry Valleys
is a Antarctic Specially Managed Area (ASMA) that is
very delicate and needs to be protected. If one hasn't
taken this class, there is no possible way the Dry Valleys
can be visited, and I really hope I get to go there this
year.
This is from the Forward of the McMurdo Dry Valleys ASMA Manual:
"The McMurdo Dry Valleys are the largest expanse of ice-free
ground in Antarctica. They contain cold desert soils millions
of years old, unusual biological communities, special geo-
logical features and minerals and spectacular scenery. Our
respective programmes are committed to the protection of this
extraordinary area and its unique values."
