Dumpster Diving

There are literally dozens of recycling categories here
at McMurdo and because we sort everything that is discarded,
65% of our waste we generate does not end up in a landfill.
In comparison, only 32.5% of total waste in the United
States is recycled. We pretty much live, breath, eat and
sleep recycling. We get used to seeing dumpsters outside
that have the familiar labels: Plastic, Glass, Wood, etc.
However, lately someone has gotten creative and created
several new dumpsters. One for "Glitter" and one for
"Urine Soaked Pants". I understand there are also dumpters
in town that are for "Dreams" and "Trashy Romance Novels"
but I haven't seen them yet. One thing I love about McMurdo
is there are always people mixing things up...keeping it
interesting!

How It Isn't...

...But it would be kind of funny if it was!

A friend of mine sent me her idea of what she would
say to people while they were transporting for their
flight north.

“In the unlikely event of a water landing, grab the
heaviest object around you and carry it off the plane.
This will aid you in drowning in peace rather than
suffering from hypothermia. If the heaviest object
happens to be the person sitting next to you, be
certain to knock them unconscious so they do not
struggle in the water and extend your suffering.”

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS FOR HUMOR PURPOSES ONLY. IT SHOULD
NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!!

The Joys of Getting Older

Yesterday we went to Lois' Place for breakfast with Susie.
When we started looking at the menus, I noticed that Susie
was using the ol' extending one's arms trick in order to
read the menu. It seems I too, suffer from this malady.
It's not that my eyes are getting weaker, it's just that my
arms aren't long enough! I loaned her my very weak
Wal-Mart special reading glasses, and that seemed to do
the trick of making her arms long enough! Later, our
conversation turned to her long drive from Washington
State to our home here in Grand Junction. We both agreed
that it was best to drive during daylight hours because it
was harder to see at night. Aaargh. Just shoot me now!!!

Potato

Our cable company has a phrase they use on their
commercials...Don't just do something, sit there. So
that's exactly what I've been doing today. Productive?
No...Fulfilling...Yes. Tomorrow will be a more
active day!

Cartoonish

Local cartoonist Matt Davidson puts together a
cartoon each week, satirizing something of topic
at McMurdo. This week, Air Services is the focus.
I haven't seen any of these panels show up yet for
Bag Drag so they must be saving them for the last
few flights!

Redeployment Meetings

We held our last Redeployment Meeting yesterday.
The Redeployment Meetings are always a highlight
of our season in Air Services and a sign that the
end is near for the summer season. This year,
Leighton, who is in charge of the Christchurch
travel office came down to present the gory
details of the travel options to all of the RPSC
and NANA folks. Susie presented other Air
Services info at five of the meetings and I
made our presentation at three of the meetings,
including the two held for night shift employees.
Now, the not so fun part comes along...entering
all of the data from everyone's Redeployment
Form into the database, including travel options,
hotel choices, dates etc. I'll be wearing out
my eyeballs, staring at a computer screen for the
next several weeks, doing my part to enter over
500 person's forms. It will be good when this
part of my job is done for the season.

My First Night...On Nights

Tonight is my first "night" shift. I think I've made the sleep
transition ok and it will be somewhat easy to stay awake.
Of course, it's still early in my "day", so we'll see what happens
when 6 AM rolls around!

Urine Nation

All over town you can see signs reminding you to
do this and do that. Save water...save electricity...
don't be hard on the equipment...wash your hands.
But now there is a new sign. One that on the surface,
seems helpful, but at the same time...disturbing.
This sign greeted me the other day when I was
using the urinal on Highway One in Building 155.
Yes, I know we should drink lots of water and that
it keeps us functioning normally since this is one
of the driest places on earth. But do we have to
get so graphic about it? And what's with the cartoon
of the guy actually using the urinal? The color chart
wasn't enough?

Hangin' with JC and EB

A classic "wish I had my camera" moment. We were taking
some stuff back to Wal-Mart today and when we pull up,
who do we see, but Jesus and the Easter Bunny walking
together in front of the store! I'm sure they were the real
Jesus and Easter Bunny. Why wouldn't they be??? So, please
forgive me. I have to go prepare for the Rapture...or an
Egg Hunt. I'm not sure which.

The Jamaica Splits?

Being a child of the 70's, I grew up watching the kid's show,
The Banana Splits. In my youthful ignorance, I hummed along
with the catchy theme song and conveniently placed it in the
back of the Vast Warehouse of Useless Information...also known
as my brain. When I went to college, I first listened to Reggae
Uber-Superstar, Bob Marley. Then I heard his song...Buffalo
Solder. Out of the back of the Warehouse popped my childhood
memory...The Banana Splits theme song. Now, you would say
I'm crazy...what the heck would Bob Marley be doing listening
to the theme song from the late sixties/early seventies. Well,
Bob was known to smoke...hams...no, not hams, but you get the
idea. He might have been recreating with some herbal varietals
and caught the Banana Splits while in a hotel somewhere in the
States and not even have known. Down the line, when writing
Buffalo Soldier, he might have remembered this ditty floating
in his head and made it his own. I've contended this for years
and have had several...ok more than several friends look at me
and shake their heads when I discussed it. (I stopped mentioning
it for fear of being committed to some place with jackets that
tie in the back). So recently, I ran across this article from the
BBC...a usually reputable source of information. Decide for
yourself:

The children's TV classic the Banana Splits is getting a modern
makeover, reviving memories of its sing-a-long theme tune.
But have you ever noticed the startling similarity between it
and Bob Marley's hit Buffalo Soldier?
Listen to Buffalo Soldier - key lyric "Woy yo yo" - and The Tra
La La Song, and it might seem like there is an echo in the room.
The eight-bar passages are remarkably similar in tune and rhythm.
But while the Banana Splits came onto the scene in 1968 as hosts
of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour, Bob Marley & the Wailers'
Buffalo Soldier did not appear until the posthumous release of
Confrontation in 1983.

So did NBC's costumed rock band of Fleegle the dog, Drooper the
lion, Bingo the gorilla and Snorky the elephant influence one of the
greatest reggae artists of all time - and if so, does it amount to
plagiarism?
According to the Bob Marley Foundation in Jamaica, the reggae
legend would probably never have heard of the Banana Splits,
let alone be inspired by them.
Spokesman Paul Kelly says he is unfamiliar with the TV show,
and nor has he dealt with other inquiries about the Banana Splits.
Buffalo Soldier is "Jamaican style straight up," he says.
"Ye man, it's reggae - it's got the 'one drop beat' of the bass
guitar and drums. The Wo yo yo is just Bob Marley being creative,
it is Jamaican slang, an exclamation, a joyful noise the Jamaicans
make when they laugh at a joke."

THE ANSWER
Bob Marley Foundation doubts it
But musicologist says songs are "strikingly similar"
One issue is whether Marley had access to the Banana Splits
But he says the song has a serious message: "In America, the red
Indians used to say the black people resembled buffalos because
of their dreadlocks - so 'Buffalo Soldier, dreadlock rasta' - and the
song is about them being 'stolen from Africa, brought to America,
fighting on arrival, fighting for survival' about 400 years ago."
But a musicologist, who asked not to be named for professional
reasons, says the songs are "strikingly similar."
The main differences are in bars two and six, where the timing
and inflection in Buffalo Soldier is more jumpy and Marley sings
with a groove, whereas the Banana Splits theme song is "straight".
And in bars three and seven, a note is gained in Buffalo Soldier or
omitted in The Tra La La Song.
"The other difference is in bar four - where the final note goes
down to a C in Buffalo Soldier but up to an E in Banana Splits.
In bar eight they both go down."

The issue of plagiarism rests to a large extent on whether Bob Marley
had access to the Banana Splits' theme song, he says. If he did not,
it couldn't be infringement of copyright as the law stands.
"Then it would be a coincidence - and coincidences do happen."
But if Bob Marley had heard the tune, "there is also always the
possibility of subconscious recollection".
BBC 1Xtra's DJ Seani B offers another possible explanation.
"It might be that Bob Marley's producer, Chris Blackwell, morphed
mainstream sounds from the era into his music to make it more
catchy. There is no evidence of this, it's just a conspiracy theory."

WHO, WHAT, WHY?

A regular feature in the BBC News Magazine - aiming to answer
some of the questions behind the headlines
Having heard other Marley songs years before their commercial
release, DJ Seani B says the originals versions were different.
"There was a watering down from the real authentic reggae,
which was more drum and basic, to a more commercial style
which would appeal to the masses."
And although Jamaican music draws inspiration from a wide
spectrum of sounds - including country music and R&B - he
thinks the cuddly cartoon characters would not have been on
Marley's radar.
"He was a serious man, I very much doubt that he would have
heard of them."

Mr. Ed...In Maori

A horse is a horse, of course, of course...
But is it a horse...if it's in Maori??? The nation of
New Zealand does an excellent job of making the most
of it's bilingual status of making sure that both English
and Maori languages are fairly evenly presented in
most mediums. Nowhere did this seem more obvious
lately when we discovered that the 60's sitcom, Mr. Ed
was being broadcast on the Maori television channel...
not in English, but in Maori! What was scary was that
I really didn't have much of a problem following the
plot line even though I know all of about two words of
Maori. Does that say something about the Maori
language or the simpleness of Mr. Ed. I'm pretty sure
it's the latter and not the former. I read an article
the other day, stating that Maori was an endangered
language. Well, I'm here to tell you, it's alive and
well and being broadcasted in the form of Mr. Ed
re-runs.

At The Teet

I ran across this photo and it made me laugh.
Even though the price of gas seems to be lower
these days, I still find it somewhat rewarding
that we don't own a car.

Weird Dreams

My subconscious mind seems to be working overtime
to catch up with adjusting to being off the Ice and adjusting
to "normal". Here's a dream I just had:

* My boss last winter, Don...is President of the United States
* I'm the guy that looks stuff up on Google to keep him informed
* Hillary Clinton is mad at me because I need to keep "my bosses"
informed that there's been a huge "milk spill" at some factory in
the Midwest...this while I'm trying to set up a display, telling
everyone about the milk spill while I'm helping out at Safeway
* There's going to be some cannons going off at the Ohio State
football game going on next to the White House but I forget to
tell anyone, so everyone is upset with me because they think
that Washington D.C. is being attacked.
* Don gets angry...not at me but at some senator. He goes over
to their house, and chops down their Lilac bush. All a big mistake
because he meant to chop down a different tree

So these are the things that are parading through my brain in
the middle of the night. What it all means? I haven't a clue...
