The reason we have 241 people at McMurdo
this winter is that there are two large construction
projects underway. One of these is the Long Distance
Balloon construction project. These are huge buildings
(36m tall) that are being built on the Sea Ice just outside
of Scott Base. Since they are being built on skis, they
will be able to be towed out farther onto the ice this
summer where the Long Distance Balloon Project
scientists will launch huge balloons that will circle
Antarctica, conducting scientific experiments in
the upper atmosphere. For more information
